RedactDoc ("the Extension") is a browser extension that automatically detects and redacts personally identifiable information (PII) from files and text before they are shared with AI chat platforms. Your privacy is central to what we do — the entire purpose of this extension is to protect your sensitive data.

1. How RedactDoc Works

When you upload a file or paste text into a supported AI chat platform (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Mistral), RedactDoc scans the content locally in your browser for PII such as names, Social Security numbers, email addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, and other sensitive data. Detected PII is replaced with anonymous tokens before the content reaches the platform.

All PII detection and redaction happens entirely on your device. No document content, file data, or detected PII values are ever transmitted to our servers or any third party.

2. Data We Collect

2.1 Anonymous Usage Analytics

We collect anonymous, aggregated usage data to understand how the Extension is used and to improve the product. This data is sent to Google Analytics 4 via the Measurement Protocol and includes:

Event counts: Number of redactions performed, file types processed, which AI platforms are used
Feature usage: Whether protection is enabled/disabled, which PII categories are toggled, settings page visits
Extension lifecycle: Install and update events, extension version
Session data: Anonymous session identifiers, engagement duration

This data does not include:

Any document content or text you process
Any PII values detected in your documents
Your name, email address, or any personal identifiers
Your browsing history or activity outside of the Extension

Each installation is identified by a randomly generated anonymous ID (UUID) stored locally on your device. This ID cannot be linked to your identity.

2.2 Voluntary Feedback

The Extension includes an optional feedback form where you may choose to:

Submit bug reports, feature requests, or general feedback (text you write)
Optionally provide your email address for follow-up

Feedback submissions are stored in Google Cloud Firestore. We only collect what you voluntarily type into the feedback form. If you do not use the feedback feature, no feedback data is collected.

2.3 Local Storage

The Extension stores the following data locally on your device using Chrome's storage API:

Your settings and preferences (PII categories, platform toggles, locale, enabled state)
Daily usage counter (number of documents processed, resets daily)
Last redaction summary (type, platform, count — no document content)
Anonymous analytics client ID (random UUID)
UI language preference

This data never leaves your device except as described in Sections 2.1 and 2.2.

3. Data We Do NOT Collect

Document contents, file contents, or pasted text
PII values detected in your documents (names, SSNs, emails, etc.)
Browsing history or activity on any website
Keystrokes, form inputs, or screen content
Authentication credentials or passwords
Location data
Device identifiers beyond the anonymous installation UUID

4. Third-Party Services

Google Analytics 4 (Measurement Protocol)

We use Google Analytics to collect the anonymous usage data described in Section 2.1. Google's privacy policy applies to this data: https://policies.google.com/privacy

Google Cloud Firestore

Voluntary feedback submissions (Section 2.2) are stored in Google Cloud Firestore. Google Cloud's terms of service and privacy policy apply: https://cloud.google.com/terms

We do not sell, share, or transfer your data to any other third parties.

5. Data Retention

Analytics data: Retained according to Google Analytics default retention settings (14 months), then automatically deleted.
Feedback data: Retained in Firestore until manually reviewed and deleted by us.
Local storage data: Stored on your device until you uninstall the Extension or clear Chrome extension data.

6. Your Rights and Choices

Disable analytics: You can block analytics requests by using a network-level ad blocker or firewall rule for google-analytics.com.
Don't submit feedback: The feedback form is entirely optional.
Uninstall: Removing the Extension deletes all locally stored data.
Data deletion request: To request deletion of any feedback data you submitted, contact us at the email below.

7. Children's Privacy

RedactDoc is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
